The winged figure arced gracefully in for a silent landing among the shadowed spires of the darkened city. In the deepening evening only the soldiers far below moved, on patrol, little aware of the activity above them. Far from the Infernoes that racked these lands the two met in silence.
"Is it true?" the leader asked.
"It is," reported the new arrival, "Roma aeternia is gone. The Himmel has been levelled. Most of the Order is gone. Those who survived are scattered and demoralized."
"What of the Templars?"
"Worse then the Engel. I did not encounter any nor did I hear of any reports."
"What of the army that did this?"
"I saw no such army, but whereever they are, they must be coming to here next. Gratianopel stands in the way of any advance further onto the continent."
"Rally what survivors you can find. I will coordinate defense and searches from here. We cannot lose another Himmel to these demonic imposters from the other side."
The first Engel dropped suddenly to the floor, an ivory knife portruding from his back. The wielder of the knife stood silently facing the shocked survivor. For a moment there was a peaceful stillness. Then a flaming sword swung towards Lucien. It clattered to the ground half a meter from his presence, a second ivory knife embedded in the attacker's chest.
Lucien, Gaurdian of Sleep and Demon of the Second Circle under Orabilis whispered into the dying Engel's ear as he retrieved his weapons: "For your deaths I am free, strange one. I warn you thus, there are far greater powers then I approaching this citadel but you will not be able to tell anyone of this. My job is done."
In the morning Gratianopel lay in ruins, and the searchers hardly noticed that two of the bodies had died quite before the place was razed.
Author's Note: I'm just toying around with the powers of the various Demons in Exalted. The enemy they slay is from a minor White Wolf product called: Engel (thru Sword and Sorcery Studios). I am also trying out my writing skills in an attempt to broaden my descriptive horizons for running an Exalted game. At some point I am going to attempt to deal with the thorny issue of this type of "demons" and Christianity. I am not sure I will be able to give you any valid points but I will let you know what I think. Or not, depends on what I do. Hope you enjoy these tiny intelligable bits of fiction I spit out.
